Gambling in ancient Indi

India has been home to gambling since before recorded history. In fact gambling was more than just a pastime in Ancient India. While little is known about the earliest forms of gambling in India, Hindu Mythologies dating back to 2000BC suggest that dice were a way to resolve conflicts. This predates the popular gambling games that have become a hobby for almost all Indians.

Gambling in the Mahabharata

The Great Indian epic Mahabharata contains a story about a game of dice. King Shakuni and Yudhishthira played the Indian dice game of Chausar to resolve a conflict between their families. However, Shakuni’s dice were loaded. Yudhishthira, unknowing of this, ended up gambling away himself, his brother and Draupadi, his wife. As Shakuni’s family, the Kauravas try to dishonour Draupadi, Krishna intervenes. Finally, Yudhishthira is taken away to heaven by Hindu god Yama. In the Ramayana also mentions gambling games and gambling boards, known as “aksa” or “devana”.

The game of Pachisi

The game Pachisi was the national game of India in ancient times. This game used the nuts of the vibhitaka tree instead of western dice. Vibhitaka nuts have five flat sides, making them ideal for games of chance. Later, these nuts were replaced by cubical dice for more reliable game outcomes.

From the colonial period onwards

During the British colonial rule, gambling was prohibited. That did not stop Indians from gambling though. Indians found their own ways of playing cards, betting heavily on Teen Patti (a poker like game), Indian Rummy as well as western gambling games.

After Indian independence

After World War II, there was a huge cry for Indian independence, and it was eventually granted in 1947. This however did little to change the situation of gambling, as all laws regarding gambling put in place by the British authorities remained in place. Indians still played their beloved games behind closed doors or in underground gambling dens.

Matka gambling

The ‘70s saw the rise of Satta Matka. This game originally involved betting on the last digits of the opening and closing price of the New York Cotton exchange, cotton being one of India’s main exports products. The game let players win, 9, 90, 900, or even 100,000 times their bet, working similar to western Keno games.

From the 1990’s to the present day

The 1990’s saw the single most important technological breakthrough of the 20th century: the launch of the internet. Just a few years after the internet had been operational, the first online casinos started popping up. Players from all over the world, especially the US and Europe began playing on offshore websites for large or small stakes. While there were a few scandals involving rogue casinos, the market gradually began to evolve into a stable and safe environment. Countries such as the UK, Curacao, and Malta led the way in offering licencing, legitimizing the industry. India lacked most crucial element for online gambling: internet access.

India’s internet boom

While India has a booming BPO industry that relies on the internet in order to outsource its talent, most Indians have not had internet access the decades. That is rapidly changing, however. Millions of Indians are now getting internet access for the first time, creating a new market for online casinos and betting companies. While India’s laws prohibit gambling, they date back to colonial times, and say nothing about online gambling, leaving a huge loophole for Indian players. At the same time, the Indian population is set to overtake China as the largest in the world. Online marketing has helped Indian players turn to online casino as the gambling method of choice.
